An EV that won't move in the cold doesn't go on a hook, a wheel-lift, or a dolly. It goes on a flatbed, every time, with all four tires off the road. Most electric drivetrains have no neutral gear the way a gas transmission does — there's no lever to disconnect the wheels from the motor. Roll those wheels while the car is powered down and you're spinning the motor itself, with no computer awake to manage what that spinning generates.
That holds whether the traction battery is dead, the 12-volt battery is dead, or the car just won't wake up in the cold. The failure doesn't change the tow method. Flatbed is the answer to all three, and it isn't a judgment call the driver makes on-site — it's the only method that doesn't risk the drivetrain.
What actually goes wrong if you tow it on its wheels anyway?
Spin a motor with the car powered off and it behaves like a generator — current with nowhere to go. On some EVs that overloads the inverter or the regenerative braking system; on others it stresses the motor windings directly. A flatbed sidesteps the problem entirely. None of the wheels turn in transit, so there's nothing for the motor to generate. That's the whole reason it's the default for an EV rather than something worth debating on the phone.
Cold doesn't just cut range — it can shut the car out completely
Lithium-ion cells move current more slowly as they cool, so a full charge holds noticeably fewer usable miles once the temperature drops. Most drivers already expect that part. What catches people off guard is the second effect: a pack cold enough will refuse to accept or deliver power at all until it warms up, even with real charge sitting inside it. The car isn't broken. It's protecting itself.
Run the cabin heater on top of that and the drain gets worse fast — an EV has no waste engine heat to borrow the way a gas car does, so the heater pulls straight from the same pack that's trying to move the car. A charge that showed real range the night before can show a fraction of that, or refuse to shift into drive, by the next freezing morning.
It might not be the big battery at all
Every EV still carries a small 12-volt battery, the same kind a gas car uses, to run the door locks, the contactors, and the computer that has to wake up before the rest of the car will do anything. If that 12-volt battery dies — a common failure, unrelated to the traction pack — the car can't release the parking mechanism or unlock, no matter how much charge is sitting in the main battery.
That's the one case where a jump pack on the 12-volt terminals, where the car exposes them, can wake things up enough to release the parking brake for loading. It won't move the car under its own power. It just gets it responsive enough to get it onto the flatbed.
