Stuck in Snow in Detroit: When It Takes Two Trucks, Not One
Some snowbank pulls take ten minutes with one strap; others need two trucks. Spinning the tires first is what turns the first into the second.
A snowbank pull with the wheels pointed straight and the drive wheels barely buried is usually a ten-minute one-strap job. Once the car's angled into the bank, high-centered, or the tires have spun down to ice, it becomes a two-truck winch-out — and every extra minute of spinning tires packs the snow harder underneath.

If the car went in straight — nose or tail into the bank, wheels roughly where they'd normally sit — one truck with a winch line usually has it back on the road in well under ten minutes. Hook to the frame or a rated tow point, steady pull, done. Why does spinning the tires make it worse?
Every second a tire spins in place, friction melts a thin layer of snow under the tread.
